Meet Mary Miller, MA, IBCLC, RLC, CPD, MCH

Mary has been working in the field of public health and human services for over 20 years. She has extensive experience overseeing programs serving people with disabilities and mental health diagnoses. For nearly 10 years she’s been a certified perinatal doula offering birth and postpartum support, and currently teaches lactation courses for doulas with the Buffalo Doula Collective in Western, NY. In 2017, Mary opened WNY Orofacial & Breastfeeding Support Center, a specialty lactation private practice in East Aurora, NY, where she regularly mentors apprentices seeking IBCLC certification and helps families navigate the complex web of services to treat TOTs (tethered oral tissues), providing treatment for infants and young children to develop functional orofacial skills.
Mary received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Rhode Island, dividing her focus between documentary filmmaking and interpersonal communications. In 2018, she received her Master of Arts in Health and Wellness with a concentration in Lactation Studies from Union Institute & University. She is currently completing dissertation research in Union’s PhD program in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Public Policy & Social Change concentration where she is studying the health policy implications of undiagnosed orofacial dysfunctions in infants and children. She is delighted to also be part of Union Institute & University's faculty teaching in the Bachelor of Science Maternal Child Health: Human Lactation program.
Mary is a member of the International Consortium of Oral Ankylofrenula Professionals, International Affiliation of Tongue Tie Professionals, International Lactation Consultant Association, American Laser Dental Study Club, United States Lactation Consultant Association, and co-coordinates a local educational gathering for local healthcare professionals looking to learn more about tethered oral tissues and their impacts upon the body and network with other providers. Interested professionals can email her here.
The early part of Mary's adulthood was spent focusing on both human and non-human welfare and issues of social justice, as an activist and documentary filmmaker. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for a 501(c)3 organization in Colorado called Rooster Sanctuary, a safe long-term home for abused and abandoned animals which predominately focuses on rooster (specifically cock-fighter) rescue, but which homes other farmed animals as well, and dabbles in nonprofit grant writing. She's also an excellent gluten free, nut free, seed free vegetarian cook and lives in the Elmwood Village neighborhood of Buffalo, NY with her two small children and a handful of rescued feral kittens.
